The right lighting can completely change a living space, transforming how it feels. At Solmer we stock a wide range of lights and lamps for household furniture and rooms. While some products may need to be fitted by a qualified electrician, many can be installed by anyone.

The kitchen is a room where lighting plays an important functional role, however a few small additions such as cabinet and plinth lights can help turn it into a room that you actually want to spend time in. Recessed downlights are elegant ways to illuminate as many surfaces as possible and incorporate the latest LED technology for a long service life. Drawer lights help you stay on top of what's at the back of those otherwise dark storage areas! More and more lights are being fitted with PIR sensors so that they stay lit when movement is detected or when the cabinet or wardrobe door is opened, and switch off when it's closed.

Over in the dining room, we have table lamps and pendant lamps as well as LED lights designed to be attached to bookshelves, perhaps to highlight an ornament. In the bedroom, LED wardrobe strip lighting and a flexible reading lamp can complement your main lighting to reinforce the sense of it being a place of sanctuary.

In the bathroom, a flat rounded ceiling light is a good way to create ambient lighting in a small space, whereas recessed spots remain a popular choice for larger rooms. Another consideration for bathroom lighting is the water ingress rating or IP rating - that is, how suitable the lights are for moisture. For example, IP44 lights are suitable for use in certain areas. This is also a consideration when choosing outdoor lights. Most security lights and floodlights are made to be weather resistant. Some lights can be used indoors and outdoors, such as the increasingly popular flexible neon LED light strips.

Other features to look out for are whether the lights are dimmable and rechargeable (usually with a lithium ion battery). Also gaining popularity these days is the ability to control the light remotely via an app or even smart speaker such as Amazon Echo.

Furniture and room lighting varies in more fundamental ways of course, such as whether you opt for a clear or frosted bulb, whether you go for a wide beam angle (to fill the room) or a narrower angle (for more focused lighting). A small round spotlight will give out a very different light to a diffused white cylindrical tube. Lights come in different colour shades too - warm white, cool white, daylight/natural light, and even RGB coloured lights for a more exciting party-like atmosphere.

They also vary by shape. Most spotlights are circular but you can also find square and triangular shaped lights for an ultra-modern look. Finally, remember to consider the finish and materials so that you choose something that fits in with its surroundings. Light fittings can be anything from matt or gloss white plastic to stainless steel and polished chrome.
